What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of conditions of the Musculoskeletal system,(MSK) including bone, muscle, nerve, ligament and joint problems.

Osteopaths are specialists in dealing with common pain conditions.

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Arthritic pain
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tennis elbow
  • Headaches (often coming from the neck)
  • Nerve pain
  • Sciatica
  • Muscular problems
  • Postural problems
  • Sports injuries

How does Osteopathy work?

Osteopathy helps treat problems by correcting and improving the body’s natural healing mechanisms. A wide range of manual treatment methods are used which are safe, effective and vary according to the individual.

The osteopath will apply a highly developed sense of touch to identify points of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body. The treatment programme also includes advice on factors which may have contributed to the problem such as posture and lifestyle. Advice is also given on appropriate exercises for rehabilitation.

What happens in a consultation?

Examination includes a full case history and a wide range of examinations including orthopaedic tests, so that practitioner understands the problem and its underlined causes.

Treatment will vary according to the individual and will be chosen from a selection of safe and effective manual techniques including massage, manipulation and muscle energy therapy.

The treatment program also includes advice on factors that may have contributed to the problem, such as posture, lack of strength/ mobility and lifestyle.

An exercise program is commonly given and is again carefully prescribed based on the individual’s capabilities and needs.

Medical Insurance

Most private medical insurance companies cover osteopathic treatment (with GP referral).
